Course details

Bridging the gap: improving children’s literacy from Key Stage 2 to 3 aims to break down the artificial barriers between key stages and support English teachers and leaders in identifying best practice at the point of Key Stage 2/3 transition. Focusing on curriculum, pedagogy and assessment in English, the project will provide a structured approach to tracking and assessment across KS2/KS3 that maintains high expectations and a balanced English curriculum. The project will explore research findings, address the realities of why transition can be so problematic for disadvantaged pupils, and support teachers in identifying evidence-informed best practice that can be developed across key stages to ensure a fluid academic transition for all.

The project builds on the work of the Hampshire Assessment and Curriculum Model across the primary and secondary phase. Over the last two years, over thirty Hampshire Secondary Schools have been involved in developing and piloting an approach to curriculum and assessment at Key Stage 3.

The project will consist of:

  • three full day workshops
  • one cluster hub session to enable secondary schools and feeder primaries to explore more specifically within their own contexts
  • two half day opportunities for clusters of schools to meet, sharing practice across phases

A taster session will also be available in June.
